The device

This is a clock that was used in the early Soyuz T spacecraft in the late sixties

It is electro-mechanical which means there are electronic parts but there are also gears and springs.

Later it was also used in the Buran space shuttle.

This clock is part of the Space Collection of Steve Jurvetson.

Connect

First connect the device for electricity and the Caesium time source

click the plug
above, click frontside

Set time

Turn the hours, minutes, seconds knob to set the time

Power on

At the bottom left of the device, flip the power switch to turn the power on

Clock

Show the time driven by an external signal

The clock has the distinctive 24 hour display. It has a resolution of half second. This means every tick of the clock is half a second.

With the Hours & Minutes button in the pressed position the clock time can be adjusted forward forward and backwards. When adjusted backwards, the alarm time is automatically adjusted backwards.

The second button has two functions. When pressed, it advances the time with half a second.
When the Hours & Minutes button is in the clock time mode position, and the second hand advance button is pressed, it moves the Hours & Minutes button out into the Mission Time adjust mode.

Alarm

It chimes when the alarm time is reached

The alarm also has the distinctive 24 hour display. It shows the hours and minutes. With the alarm button, the alarm time can bet set. But thealarm knob can only be turned clockwise, and the alarm time is adjusted backwards! With the alarm on switch the alarm is turned on.
When the alarm time is reached the alarm sounds. To turn off the alarm sound, turn off the alarm.

Chronometer/stopwatch

The dials show the hours, minutes and seconds.

The stopwatch has sequential states: Reset, start and stop set by the start, stop, clear button. The dial shows the state the chronometer is in with the initials. Press the button ans it cycles through the states.

Curious Marc posted a series of videos about the opening of the Soyuz Space clock and Ken said: 'Now somebody needs to make a 3D model of it'. And I thought: hey, I can do that!

It seemed a worthwhile project and I would learn a lot. At first I was just thinking of making the 3D model but there was a lot you could explain about the device so making the model interactive and adding explanations became the next challenge.

The model was made in Blender and exported in the gltf format. It is loaded and displayed on the webpage with the three.js library.
